I donated my piece to Headlands Center for the Arts and The Intersection for the Arts for their auction events.

Taro Hattori, Pepe Enola Gay

I titled this piece "Pepé -Enola Gay" this time. I constructed a kind of light box for the version for the Intersection. The light box is not actually like a box. It is not enclosed. So, it emits the light all around the work like a halo.

I am having a show at NURTUREart in Brooklyn, NYC

The exhibition is titled "Interface : Nature" and I am showing "nippletta" (2003). Yes, it is not a new work but I am excited about the context of the exhibition, and inspiring combination with the works of other interesting artists.

Cartesian philosophy holds that humans are separate from the rest of the world due to our seemingly unique communication and reasoning abilities. This idea has been perpetuated by Western culture and science, and has influenced our understanding of our place in the world. Using a variety of approaches, the artists included in Interface: Nature question this division. Several works reference our desire to impose foreign logic on natural experiences; others illuminate the failure of our bodies to function with animal efficiency. Some imply a danger inherent in this understanding of the world. Interface: Nature explores the contradictions and complexities of this human/nature conceptual divide in ways that are at once profound, unique, and amusing.

I am happy to announce these things lined up ahead.

I was awarded a residency at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts in Taipei, Taiwan. It is a residency at a contemporary art museum which is affiliated with Taipei National University of the Arts. Nomura Cultural Foundation generously decided to fund my residency by their Art Project Grant. It will be in September 2009.

Headlands Center for the Arts invited me for their residency program. They will provide me a big "Project Room" where I like to develop my big cardboard installations ("Oh, the Humanity!," "... till that morning" and such) further. I am so happy about this offer. I will do my best to respond to their appreciation and expectation of the development of my work.

My solo show at Swarm Gallery has been scheduled. It opens on October 30, 2009. I plan to complete the most of the artworks in the residency at Headlands.

Hmm... 2009 is the busiest. (Every year is the busiest, anyway...)

::: March 07, 2009 :::

For their 25th Anniversary Silent & Live Auction, I donated my piece to the LAB (where I serve as a curatorial committee member). This piece is called "I miss you so much, Call me now" and very similar to "Stand Alone and Explode," one of the Cute Beaut Brute Series. It has mirrored bombs and a mirrored cell phone. I hope this piece draws a good amount into the LAB.

Today, I went to Headlands and took photo documentation of "Oh, the Humanity!." It was not an easy shooting condition because it too dark and the piece is too big... But, I got some nice ones. Now it's up as a project page.

::: January 16, 2009 :::

I am showing my new piece at Headlands Center for the Arts. I titled it "Oh, the Humanity!." Well, I am not actually terribly sure about if this title reminds people the subject matter of the work. It's Hindenburg, the largest manmade object ever to fly. It was designed by German Nazi, and exploded (burnt) in New Jersey on May 6, 1937. The cause of the fire is still unproven but there are two theories, being sabotaged by conspiracy or ignited by the discharge of static electricity. Well, it's a mysterious disaster.

Here are some pictures from the installation process. As of today, it's still unfinished! Just I need to add small things.

I am showing one of my work in Kala Artists' Annual Exhibition. This work is new, and is a sketch of the idea I have had for a while. The title is "spread your wings," again one of the lines from Summertime as I titled my last piece "... till that morning." Please come to see the piece and other interesting work by a greatly extensive selection of Kala related artists.

For this print I donated, I used the schematics of Enola Gay I made for "...till that morning" the piece I had shown in the exhibition "3 Way Calling" in Poland and some other images from its catalog. I had wanted to make something like this so long, putting together the materials from the process of making bigger scale installation and making it into prints or books. Let's see what else I can make out of the process of the piece...

::: August 30, 2008 :::

I finally finished my project for "3 Way Calling," the exhibition in Opole, Poland with Aleksandra Janik and Michael Damm. I am pretty happy about the result. During the process of producing it, as it happens always when I am making something, I got some possibilities to develop this project furthermore. Of course, I could not make those possibilities happen in this show, but those will be my next projects! Please take a look at these photos of the piece.

The airplane is the replica of B-29A Superfortress "Enola Gay" which dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.Text is the lyrics of "Summertime" by George Gershwin. The lyric was written by DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, and Ira Gershwin. The cicada sound was recorded in Japan

Summertime

Summertime,
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high

Your daddy's rich
And your mamma's good lookin'
So hush little baby
Don't you cry

One of these mornings
You're going to rise up singing
Then you'll spread your wings
And you'll take to the sky

But till that morning
There's a'nothing can harm you
With daddy and mamma standing by

Summertime,
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high

Your daddy's rich
And your mamma's good lookin'
So hush little baby
Don't you cry

For this exhibition in Poland, I am developing a new piece. It has been for a while since my residency at Taipei Artist Villege to construct a big installaion piece at a place very far from my home. This time I use the material I have never used, corrugated cardboard, and making a big airplane, B-29 Enola Gay!

"3 Way Calling" is an exhibition featuring three artists from three culturally and historically distinctive countries, Aleksandra Janik from Poland, Taro Hattori from Japan and Michael Damm from the U.S.A. "3 Way Calling" explores the subjective experiences of mobility and relocation in the globalized world. Three artists gathered to explore the shift of perspective and gaps in cultural perceptions that occur so frequently in our increasingly multi-centered world. The mechanism for their inquiry is a kind of triangular rotation - each artist moves one step over to make work in (and, to some extent, for and about) home countries of one of the other artists; Aleksandra Janik addresses Japan, Taro Hattori addresses US, and Michael Damm addresses Poland.

Aleksandra Janik's installation and black and white photographs are derived from her experience in Japanese gardens, expressing their tactility and tranquility. Taro Hattori creates a room size installation with sound and a cardboard sculpture of the Enola Gay, the airplane which dropped an A-bomb at the end of WWII. Michael Damm presents photographic and video collages which document the city-scape of Katowice, layering space and history to construct suggestively poetic images.
